Prioritize Your Goals for Success

It may seem quicker to just get to it and start taking action when you have goals you want to achieve but don’t. Prioritize your goals first. Stop and ask yourself what it is you really want to achieve so you can set goals that are realistic and attainable.

There are a lot of people with lofty goals but their number one problem is a failure to prepare. By not being prepared the initial motivation that was there to achieve that goal wains. This is because your goal isn’t clear causing your action plan to be vague at best. You can’t prioritize your goal if it’s not clearly laid out.

One of my favorite quotes by Jack Canfield so clearly demonstrates what happens when our goals aren’t clear.

“You don’t want to get to the top of the ladder only to find out you had it leaning up against the wrong wall.” -Jack Canfield

The point is you have to prioritize your goals by having a clearly mapped out plan to achieve them. Here you will find some of the reasons proper goal setting can make all the difference in achieving your goals.

Get Your Priorities Straight

THE most important thing about goal setting is prioritizing your goals. Setting goals BEFORE you get started keeps you on track, keeps you focused, and keeps you organized. If you don’t have your priorities straight not only will you not have a clear direction, you won’t have any direction at all. If you really want to be successful, you MUST prioritize your goals. But, how will you know what you actually want to achieve in the first place?

It Seems Urgent, But Is It Important to the End Goal?

If you’re someone with big goals you may always be on the go. There may seem like there is so much to do and so little time. It can overwhelm even the calmest and most rational person. It’s important to take a step back when prioritizing your goals and determine if those urgent things you are doing are really necessary. Are they going to get you closer to where you want to be?

Remember, you don’t want to find your ladder has been leaning against the wrong wall…

Plan ahead and prioritize your to-dos. Sort out what needs to be done now vs. what can be done later or delegated. For instance, can you delegate answering emails to someone else? Maybe hire a virtual assistant? The cost may offset the time saved.

Motivation

If you set clear, specific goals that are aligned with your ultimate end results, every win you have will help keep you motivated. You should break your goals into smaller actionable steps. If you set clear, specific goals, every small success will propel you forward and keep you motivated. The short-term goals are things that you would plan to do weekly and monthly. Ultimately, each of the short-term goals builds on each other to achieve your long-term goal.

Prioritizing Your Goals Keeps You on Track

When you are a goal achiever, you work harder than everyone else. Sometimes this entails longer hours than everyone else and feeling like you are always on the go. You are someone who does whatever it takes to achieve your goals. Because you are a hard worker it’s easy to lose sight of your goals or forget what it is you actually want to achieve. Because of this, it is so important to prioritize your goals both short and long term and review them regularly. By reviewing your goals regularly you will keep yourself on track. Having a clear process will help you get back to your plan; stay disciplined and achieve your goals.

Additional Reading…

I love goal setting. Part of getting better at setting and achieving goals is learning how to do it better. I love reading in general but I have found some very helpful books to help me strategize and plan. My number one get-it-done book is Eat that Frog by Brian Tracy. It details practical steps for setting and achieving your goals. It’s a short but useful book. I originally bought the audiobook and loved it but it wasn’t very easy for me to put into practice so I bought a hard copy of the book.

Planning…

I also have a simple undated digital planner that is compatible with Goodnotes or Notability for sale. It will help with goals getting and getting you organized.
